Fables and French Society
Join us for a rare literary treat on Sunday October 12th from 2:00 to 3:30 pm at Creighton University’s Mike and Josie Harper Center (Rooms 2057/2058). There is parking at 20th & Cass Street, and our campus location is on 20th Street between Burt & Cass. Team up with us as we explore the role of fables in French society, as adapted into French verse by the 17th century writer Jean de la Fontaine.
Enjoy light snacks and refreshments before the program.
Meet our presenter, Father Greg Carlson, SJ, of Creighton University, who will share his unique perspectives and insights on fables gained from decades of collecting and reflection. His Carlson Fable Collection includes over 10,000 books and 8,000 objects and occupies its own room at Creighton’s library.
Learn about the poet and fabulist Jean de la Fontaine, who revised classic fables for a French audience. His Fables are considered among the greatest masterpieces of French literature. Even today, French children can recite at least some of them by heart.
Listen to a reading of selected La Fontaine fables in French and English, followed by Fr. Carlson’s commentary and discussion questions.
View the Carlson Fable Collection at the Creighton Library; a short walk from our meeting room.
