Le Français Lyrique - in Person
DESCRIPTION: Improve your French pronunciation through an exploration of French lyric diction. This class will introduce you to the methods used in “French Diction for Singers” courses and by voice teachers coaching students in how to sing in French, an approach that is also applicable to perfecting the pronunciation of conversational French. This discussion will include an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet, a useful tool for understanding how French language sounds are formed. We will explore the differences between spoken and lyric French by reading the lyrics of simple French songs, such as “Sur le pont d”Avignon”, as well as classical French poetry; by listening to recordings of French mélodies; and even through singing! Each class session will culminate with a spotlight on a French poem that was set to music by prominent French composers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the golden age of the French mélodie.
