Allons au ciné ! - in Person
DESCRIPTION: This in-person class is designed for intermediate/advanced students. It will be conducted primarily in French, though there may be occasional short video clips, one or two handouts, and a PowerPoint in English. The class will center around Laurent Tirard’s 2007 film Molière, described as follows in this excerpt from cinema.com: “22-year-old Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Molière, is not yet the writer that history recognizes as the father & true master of comic satire, author of The Misanthrope and Tartuffe, and a dramatist to rank alongside Shakespeare & Sophocles. Far from it. He is in fact, a failed actor....Boasting an extraordinary cast, sumptuous production values and a witty and sophisticated script in the tradition of Shakespeare In Love, director Laurent Tirard's romantic period drama reveals the tantalizing mystery behind the birth of France's greatest dramatist.”
A primary goal of the class is to enhance students’ understanding of Francophone culture and to provide students with an ample opportunity to speak French through a variety of discussion-based activities. Dr. Patrice J. Proulx, who grew up in a bilingual family in Northern Maine with origins in Quebec and New Brunswick, specializes in contemporary French and francophone culture, literature, and film. She spent one year as a Rotary Scholar in Montpellier, France, and later lived in Paris for two years while writing her doctoral dissertation (Cornell University). Maximum 10 students.
