Mais, au dernier moment, elle avoue sa faute en même temps que son amour longtemps caché pour Montriveau. Ce début amène un long retour en arrière, à l’époque où la duchesse menait le monde par le bout du nez, faisant ménage à part avec son mari et méprisant ses soupirants. C'est la dernière œuvre littéraire de Camus publiée du vivant de l'auteur. Le recueil comporte six textes : La Femme adultère, Le Renégat (ou Un esprit confus), Les Muets , L'Hôte, Jonas (ou L'Artiste au travail) et La Pierre qui pousse. Chacun de ces textes illustre le sentiment d'insatisfaction et d'échec du personnage central et sa difficulté à trouver « Le Royaume », c'est-à-dire un sens à sa vie et le bonheur en dépassant l'opposition apparente des contraires comme « solitaire/solidaire ». Les personnages ont des parcours propres dans des cadres différents situés surtout en Algérie (le campement nomade dans le désert, les bourgades du sud, l'école isolée dans la montagne, les quartiers ouvriers d'Alger) mais aussi dans un quartier bourgeois de Paris ou un village du Brésil. Elle non plus n'avait pu briser son silence, comprendre ce qu’il cherchait quand il arpentait périodiquement toute l’Amérique latine, et savoir ce qu’il est maintenant devenu. Diégane ne retrouve la trace d’Elimane qu’un an après sa mort. Il avait laissé une lettre pour « celui qui viendrait », ainsi que le début d’un autre manuscrit. First, we will start at 4:00 p.m. instead of our usual 1:30 p.m. Second, we are inviting our QdF members to bring family along, which means that English (and other languages) are welcome. This will be a picnic in the shade with allowances to move indoors in case of bad weather. Salads and kebobs will be provided. Bring drinks and desserts as you wish. We will have tables and chairs. Résumé : Dans sa quête, Diégane rencontre Siga D., qui semble détenir beaucoup de secrets. Elle connaît le drame des parents d’Elimane, le mystère de sa naissance et les raisons cachées de son départ pour la France. Elle a également rencontré la journaliste qui avait interviewé les éditeurs d’Elimane sans en tirer grand-chose, ainsi qu’une poétesse haïtienne qui avait vécu quelques années avec lui en Argentine. Elle non plus n'avait pu briser son silence, comprendre ce qu’il cherchait quand il arpentait périodiquement toute l’Amérique latine, et savoir ce qu’il est maintenant devenu. Diégane ne retrouve la trace d’Elimane qu’un an après sa mort. Il avait laissé une lettre pour « celui qui viendrait », ainsi que le début d’un autre manuscrit. Et qui pousse un certain Guy Roland, employé dans une agence de police privée que dirige un baron balte, à partir à la recherche d'un inconnu disparu depuis longtemps ?
