Collaborative Screening of
On Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 7 pm, Film Streams and Joslyn Art Museum will present a special screening of MARIE ANTOINETTE at the Ruth Sokolof Theater, 1340 Mike Fahey Street, followed by a discussion. This screening of Sofia Coppola’s inventive take on Versailles opulence will coincide with Joslyn’s exhibition “Bijoux Parisiens: French Jewelry from the Petit Palais, Paris.”
Written and directed by Academy Award winner Sofia Coppola (LOST IN TRANSLATION, THE BEGUILED), MARIE ANTOINETTE is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, which served only to seal her fate.
Joslyn’s Associate Curator of European Art, Dana E. Cowen, Ph.D., will kick off the evening with an introduction to the exhibition. Film Streams Director of Education, Diana Martinez, Ph.D., will offer film criticism of Coppola’s portrayal of excess in Marie Antoinette. Following the film, a short presentation about the historic Marie Antoinette will be facilitated by Juliette Parnell, Ph.D., Professor of French in the University of Nebraska Omaha Department of Foreign Languages and a scholar of French cinema and culture. She will highlight the “affair of the diamond necklace,” a scandal that rocked Versailles and France in 1785.
You’ll also be excited to hear film stream is opening Bertrand Tavernier’s MY JOURNEY THROUGH FRENCH CINEMA this Friday, July 21 for a one-week engagement.
