We'll begin with French carols sung by all, followed by wonderful music performed by Arthur Masyuk, violinist - Nigun (Improvisation) No. 2 from Baal Shem (Three Pictures of Chassidic Life) , Ernest Bloch (1880–1959)
About the Artist
Arthur Masyuk is currently at DePaul University in Chicago completing his MM Violin Performance. Arthurperforms in the Chicago area and teaches violin. He also holds a BA in French Language & Literature from Indiana University. Arthur frequents Alliance Française de Chicago and is excited to join AFO. His message to us: Grand Merci à toutes et à tous!
The artist's reflections on the Composition:
"The unique and virtuosic Baal Shem Suite exploits the violin’s dramatic range and its technique. The Suite’s second piece, Nigun, I most easily put as a “Jewish prayer rendered on the violin”: its swollen cries and, conversely, its retreating whispers fit perfectly the violin’s capacity for caprice."
“On the Eve of AFO’s Centennial”
One hundred years ago in February 1917, a Frenchman named Felix Despecher founded the Omaha chapter of the Alliance Française. In his life, he was head of the Creighton Dental School, Mayor of Ralston, and AFO Président for 23 years. If he could only see us now!
